Sumo Fest 2026 is a first-of-its-kind cultural festival in Calgary that brings the ancient sport of Japanese sumo wrestling to life in a modern, immersive festival setting. Over two unforgettable days, guests will experience live professional sumo, authentic ceremony, and a vibrant Japanese food and culture marketplace — all under one roof.
SumoFest is designed to educate, entertain, and inspire.
Our goals:
• Celebrate Japanese culture in an authentic and accessible way
• Educate audiences through sport, ceremony, and cuisine
• Support local Japanese-owned businesses
• Attract tourism and national media to Calgary
Watch top-ranked sumo wrestlers collide in live matches from only a few feet away, with the energy of the match and the crowd all around you. Each live sumo show runs for about 90 minutes, packed with matches, ceremony, and storytelling.
Sumo is Japan’s ancient full-contact sport—fast, powerful, and rich with tradition. Matches are short and intense, with wrestlers relying on skill, balance, and pure strength to win inside the dohyo (the circular ring).
SumoFest 2026 is produced in partnership with the Calgary Japanese Community Association (CJCA), with support from Stampede Park and the City of Calgary through the Downtown in Motion Grant.
